  1. The pharynxis is a muscular cavity behind the 
  2. nose and mouth, extending downwards from the 
  3. base of the skull. Its walls are made of 
  4. muscle strengthened with a fibrous layer and 
  5. lined with mucous membrane. The internal 
  6. nostrils lead backwards into the pharynx, 
  7. which continues downwards into the oesophagus 
  8. and (through the epiglottis) into the 
  9. windpipe.
